Westerns

"Any man can shoot a gun, and with practice he can draw fast and shoot accurately, but that makes no difference. What counts is how you stand up when somebody is shooting back at you." - Louis L'Amour

The American West gave rise to stories and legends about the cowboys, cattlemen, gunfighters, buffalo hunters, pioneers, and plainsmen who settled the land in the latter half of the 19th Century. Westerns depict a society organized around codes of honor and personal justice. A literary descendant of the Arthurian knight errant and the Japanese ronin, the heroes of Westerns often rescue damsels in distress and right wrongs. These shoot-'em-ups were made popular by writers like Zane Grey, Max Brand, Louis L'Amour, and Elmore Leonard -- and all the cowboy movies based on their books.
